The hours of operation of the Recovery Area at the Eaglehawk Recycle Shop will change as of Monday 30th Janurary to fall in line with the operation of the Eaglehawk Landfill. It will now operate from 8am to 4.30pm 7 days a week.

Manager of the Eaglehawk Recycle Shop Peter Buck said today “The new hours will stop confusion between the two venues but will continue to save customers of the landfill many hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in fees. Customers have the choice of separating their loads so that items that can be reused or recycled can be off loaded before they go into the landfill. They can do this via a free service at the Recovery Area just before the landfill gate. Two items attract a fee being refrigeration units and mattresses. Staff are paid to handle these items so they can be recycled.”

Mr Buck said “It is always challenging to get the mix of product right because sales are the only source of income that has kept the Eaglehawk Recycle Shop operating since 1994. Prices for product are always changing and as it is a labour intensive enterprise wages are our biggest expense.

Customers who bring materials to the enterprise not only care for the environment but they are also creating work and extending the life of the landfill.

Councils are faced with huge expenditure bills of millions of dollars for not only operating a landfill but once filled for rehabilitating them. So it makes sense to reuse and recycle materials but it is up to the wider community to participate. Without that key ingredient the enterprise is not viable. But everybody is a winner if materials are kept out of landfill.”

The sales area operating times at the Eaglehawk Recycle Shop will remain the same. Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 5pm with Wednesdays opening 9.30am to 5pm and Sundays 10.30am to 3.30pm.
